How to Grow a Cannabis Bonsai Tree using our seeds

Cannabis is an annual plant but cannabis bonsai trees can defy this fact and last for a few years or even longer. The art of growing Bonsai Trees was derived from Japan and it is based on China’s penjing. Bonsai means “tray planting” in Japanese. Any seed can be grown into a Bonsai tree, but it needs to be trained well. There are several techniques such as pruning and root control, which are used to control the growth of the plant.

Steps for Growing Cannabis Bonsai Tree:

A Cannabis bonsai tree should be trained properly to bend and grow properly. Cannabis bonsai trees do not have wide trunks and their trunk would be bendy and not straight. It must be noted that temperature should be maintained within 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels should be maintained at 40-50%. It is recommended that watering should be done, once every 5 days, with distilled water. The total process can extend from 3 to 3.5 months.

Step 1 – Get the right seeds! Use Autoflowers!

Before starting with your own cannabis bonsai, there are a couple of things you should have in mind. First of all; In order for your bonsai to turn out as good as it can be, it’s better to use strains that tend to grow shorter and compact, with a thicker stem, and smaller leaves, so in general, it’s recommended to use shorter varieties. Due to the smaller size, it’s highly advised to use Indica-dominant auto-flowers which grows even less than Indica-leaning photoperiodic strains and will make it easier to control your cannabis bonsai’s height.

Step 2 – Bending the stem:

Buy some 1.5mm or 16 gauge aluminum wire for crafts/bonsai.

After the plant is about 4″ high and has a few leaves growing, insert bonsai aluminum wire near the plant base running from the bottom of the pot to the top of the plant. Wrapping the plant with the wire, bend in the direction you wish. Do this gently and without damaging the root system of the plant. Now, you should have a  Γ shaped plant. The plant will turn up towards the light source within 1-2 days. This is the start of your Cannabonsai!

Side note: We do not recommend the tie string or twine to the base of pot technique- old fashion wire works best!

Step 3 – Wire the branches:

After the plant has 3 fully grown nodes, the branches should also be wired in the direction of the required growth. Wiring the branches helps to maintain the structure of the plant. This step also helps in reducing the height of the plant. There should be some space between the branches.

Step 4 – Pruning:

Mandatory: Pruning helps in maintaining the structure of the plant as well as the productivity of the plant. Prune some of the new sprouts, as damaging the main branches can affect the growth of the tree. Excessive branches can lead to moisture accumulation and fungal growth therefore it is necessary to prune the plant.

Step 5 – Harvesting:

Do not expect GIANT budacious buds-it’s a bonsai. Harvesting the Cannabis bonsai must be done when the trichomes turn cloudy. For autoflowering varieties, the harvesting can be done after a week after trichomes turn cloudy. After the buds are harvested, they must be dried in a ventilated room and once branches easily break from the stem, they have to be cured in an airtight glass container in a dark place at room temperature. The container should be filled only up to 3/4th. The buds should be turned every day. The relative humidity should be maintained at 50-70% inside the container. The buds can be used once they are 50% dry

Extending the life of a Cannabis-Bonsai tree:

To extend the life of a Cannabis Bonsai tree, cut off the top one-third portion of the Bonsai tree. Remove the old yellow leaves and trim the middle one-third portion heavily. Do not remove the buds from the lower part, as they are important for the regeneration of the Cannabis-Bonsai tree. Afterward, the Cannabis Bonsai tree must be supplemented with a lot of nitrogen and 18 hours of sunlight for it to restart growth.

Conclusion:

Cannabis bonsai trees require care and patience but they provide a rewarding experience and require much less space than normal cannabis plants. Cannabis bonsai trees usually produce less yield when compared to normal cannabis plants but the extension of their lifespan helps in enjoying their benefits longer.
