The #1 Question: Indoor or Outdoor?

For Indoor Cannabis Growing:

Use Autoflower Seeds!

Autoflower seeds are the seed of choice for those who want easy, fast, convenient, and decent harvests. They typically grow great indoors from seed to harvest in around 10-11 weeks under 20 hours of daily light. Autoflowers start to bloom automatically around 5-6 weeks after germination. The grower doesn’t need to change the light cycle, it happens ‘automatically’.

Autoflower seeds are easy to grow and often stay short, squat, and bushy. Due to the short auto life cycle, you might not be able to get quite the same yields as a feminized seed variety that has enjoyed a long period of vegetative growth. But yields from the best autoflower seeds can be several hundred grams per plant from well-grown indoor autos.

Benefits of Growing Cannabis Indoors:

  1. Control: Indoor cultivation offers precise control over environmental factors such as light, temperature, humidity, and airflow. This control allows for year-round growth regardless of external conditions;
  2. Strain Variety: Indoor growing allows you to cultivate a broader range of cannabis strains that might not thrive in your local outdoor climate;
  3. Privacy: You’ll enjoy enhanced privacy and security, keeping your cultivation away from prying eyes and potential theft;
  4. Pest and Disease Control: Growing cannabis indoors reduces the risk of pests and mold, helping you maintain a healthy crop.

Considerations of Growing Cannabis Indoors:

  1. Cost: Setting up an indoor grow space for cannabis plants requires an initial investment in equipment. The two leading options for indoor growing are grow tents and automated grow boxes. For tent growers, they’ll also need to separately arrange for lights, fans, and ventilation systems;
  2. Energy Consumption: Indoor growing consumes more energy due to artificial lighting and climate control systems.
Tips For Indoor Autoflower Seeds Growing

Don’t overfertilize. Growing autoflowering cannabis plants is a simple process. These plants are petite and have a rapid flowering cycle, making them low-maintenance. To optimize their growth, it is recommended to reduce their nutrient intake.

Have your next seedling ready. Maximizing the potential of autoflowering cannabis strains and achieving multiple harvests in a single season can be achieved by germinating seeds just before the previous plant completes its flowering cycle. This approach allows for the collection of high-quality buds and the ability to plant new seeds every few months. If grown indoors, this method can result in a continuous supply of cannabis.

Maximize your light intake. Autoflowering cannabis plants have the advantage of not requiring specific light schedules to initiate flowering. This allows growers to provide these plants with maximum light exposure throughout their entire lifecycle. By utilizing Low Stress Training (LST) techniques, the budsites can be strategically positioned to receive optimal light from the source. To achieve the highest possible yield from autoflowering seeds, it is recommended to maintain a light cycle of 16/8 or even 20/4 from seed to harvest.

For Outdoor Cannabis Growing:

Use Feminized Seeds!!

With Feminized seeds the flowering/budding occurs when less sunlight is administered, closer to the change in seasons from summer to fall. Perfect for outdoor growing.

Indoor growers can mimic this change in light by adjusting their grow lights. It’s an easy process that requires some research and having an experienced person alongside never hurts if you’re a first-time grower. Plants grown from female seeds produce more buds and fewer leaves than plants grown from auto-flowering seeds. The pruning process is also much easier with plants grown from female seeds.

Benefits of Growing Cannabis Outdoors:

  1. Natural Sunlight: Outdoor cultivation benefits from the full spectrum of natural sunlight, leading to potentially larger yields and richer cannabinoid profiles;
  2. Cost: Growing cannabis outdoors is generally more cost-effective as you don’t need to invest in a set of equipment;
  3. Size Potential: Outdoor weed plants can reach larger sizes, potentially leading to higher yields if you have sufficient space;
  4. Sustainability: Growing cannabis outdoors has a lower carbon footprint as it relies on natural sunlight and doesn’t consume as much energy.

Considerations of Growing Cannabis Outdoors:

  1. Climate Restrictions: Outdoor cultivation is limited by your local climate and seasonal changes;
  2. Pest and Disease Risks: Plants grown outdoors are more exposed to pests and diseases, requiring proactive measures for prevention.
Next: How to Germinate Your Cannabis Seeds

PLEASE follow these 3 simple steps for best results:

1) Empty your cannabis seed from the capsule you received in a cup of purified room-temperature water. Don’t worry if it sinks or floats.

2) Place the container in a dark warm place (like a kitchen cabinet) for 24-48 hours, but no longer! You do NOT want a long and very delicate tap root to be growing at this stage-

3) After the 24-48 hours- gently scoop out the seed with a spoon and place/cover it 1/2” deep in good potting soil or preferably in a soaked Jiffy pellet/peat pellet (buy Jiffy pellets from Amazon or local hardware/garden store).

* Keep the soil/pellet moist (not soaked) and warm under your grow lights

* Seedling should sprout within 3-10 days depending on the strain

*After the little seedling has grown to around 3″ tall- transfer him to his new home and enjoy the ride!*

Side Note: Some suggest germinating cannabis seeds using a wet paper towel on a plate/tweezer method. We find that this method is not the best for cannabis seeds because paper towels dry out quickly and getting the germinating seeds out of the paper towel can be clumsy damaging the seedling. Using tweezers can be dangerous as soaked seeds are much more fragile. We like to play it safe and germinate cannabis seeds using purified water and jiffy pellets which are specifically designed to easily germinate seeds.
